It is crucial that more housing be provided in and close to the town centre. This is because Southend is ringed by the green belt and thus there is no room for outward expansion. Every effort should be made to find suitable new sites, including the use of redundant office blocks which are now no longer required. Owners and developers should be encouraged to bring these forward with the emphasis on the lower end of the market.
